帮忙 (bāngmáng) should be used in contexts where help is needed or requested. It is appropriate to use when expressing gratitude to someone for helping, such as 谢谢你帮忙 (xièxie nǐ bāngmáng, "thank you for your help").
帮忙 should not be used in contexts where help is not needed or requested. For example, it would not be appropriate to say 帮忙去买东西 (bāngmáng qù mǎi dōngxi, "help me go buy something") if the speaker is capable of going alone. In this case, it would be better to say 去买东西 (qù mǎi dōngxi, "go buy something").
