To use 几天 (jǐ tiān) when asking how long something has been happening, you can use it in a question format such as "这件事情已经发生了几天了?" (zhè jiàn shì qíng yǐ jīng fā shēng le jǐ tiān le?) which translates to "How many days has this been happening?"
You can also use it in a statement such as "这个项目已经进行了几天了" (zhè gè xiàng mù yǐ jīng jìn xíng le jǐ tiān le) which means "This project has been going on for a couple of days."
