In conversation, 娘 (niáng) is commonly used to refer to one's mother, or to address an elderly married woman. It can also be used in the word 姑娘, to refer to a young woman, usually in a respectful way. For example, 她是一个可爱的姑娘 (tā shì yīgè kě'ài de gūniang) can be used to describe a young woman as being lovely.
