The original meanings of 红 and 绿 in ancient Chinese were "light-red-colored silk" and "green-colored silk" respectively. Later as time went by, the colors were applied to other objects as well. This radical - 纟 - meaning "silk" played a role in the original meaning of the word and nowaday the meaning has shifted and widened, the radical the character is kept as part of it, still used today..
