Hi! Please note that in the trainchinese dictionary, there are two entries for 堂. I think your comment should be under this entry instead:

It's usually not used alone. It's usually used to form other words or idioms, e.g. 儿孙满堂 [idiom] to have children and grandchildren in the household, with children and grandchildren filling the house
