当初 (dāngchū) is commonly used to refer to a time in the past, usually when something was different than it is now. For example, one might say 当初我们没有想到会发生这样的事 (dāngchū wǒmen méiyǒu xiǎngdào huì fāshēng zhèyàng de shì; "At first, we didn't think something like this would happen"). It can also be used to contrast two different situations, such as 当初他们很满意,但现在他们对此不满 (dāngchū tāmen hěn mǎnyì, dàn xiànzài tāmen duì cǐ bù mǎn; "At first, they were satisfied, but now they are not").

当初 (dāngchū) is usually used in more formal settings. It is a more formal way of saying "at that time, at first, originally" than other words such as 原来, 本来 or 原本.
