The term 武侠 (wǔxiá) originated from the combination of two Chinese characters: 武 (wǔ) meaning "martial arts" and 侠 (xiá) meaning "chivalry". It first appeared in Chinese literature during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and was used to describe a type of hero who possessed both exceptional martial arts skills and a strong sense of righteousness and chivalry.
