明年 (míngnián) should be used when referring to the year after the current year. For example, if it is currently 2020, 明年 (míngnián) would refer to 2021. It can also be used to refer to the future in general, such as when making plans for the future. For example, "我们明年去旅行吧" (wǒmen míngnián qù lǚxíng ba) which translates to "Let's go travelling next year".
