麻将 (má jiàng) is a four-player game that originated in China. It is played with a set of 144 tiles, which are divided into three suits: Bamboos (条 tiao), Circles (筒 tong), and Characters (万 wan). The goal of the game is to be the first player to form a winning hand of 14 tiles.
Each player is dealt 13 tiles, and the remaining tiles are placed in the center of the table. The players take turns drawing and discarding tiles, and the game ends when one player has formed a winning hand. The winning hand is usually composed of four sets of three tiles (called pungs) and a pair.
The game is usually played with four players, but it can also be played with two or three players. The rules of the game vary depending on the region, but the basic rules remain the same.
