When it comes to the position, 有点(儿) is used before an adjective/a phrase with the meaning of an adjective. E.g. 有点远,有点冷,有点不舒服 (please refer to the example sentences).
When we consider the meanings, 有点(儿) is used to express one's opinions or judgments of something, and they are usually negative comments. It is for this reason that 有点(儿) can only be followed by adjectives of neutral meanings or negative meanings.
Example 1. 那个地方有点儿远。 That place is a little bit (too) far.
In Example 1, 远 is a comment about "that place", and the speaker doesn't like the fact that that place is far. 远 is an adjective with a neutral meaning (neither good nor bad), and it can be used after 有点(儿).
Example 2. 这家酒吧有点儿吵。 This bar is a little noisy.
吵 (noisy) is an adjective with a negative meaning, and it can be used after 有点(儿).
* Attention! Adjectives with positive/good meanings cannot be used after 有点(儿).

有点(儿) is often compared with 一点(儿) in their different uses and meanings. Please read my comments for 一点(儿) if you are interested in learning their differences.
