直辖市 (zhíxiáshì) are municipalities directly under the Central Government of China. There are four such cities in China: 北京 (Běijīng), 天津 (Tiānjīn), 上海 (Shànghǎi), and 重庆 (Chóngqìng). These cities have the same administrative status as provinces, and are the only cities in China that are not part of a province.
