一个 (yīgè) is used to indicate a single item or person. For example, 你有一个 (nǐ yǒu yīgè) 姐姐 means "you have one elder sister". It can also be used to indicate a single instance of something, such as 今天我吃了一个 (jīntiān wǒ chīle yīgè) 苹果, which means "I ate one apple today".
