觉察 and 发现 are different as "detect" and "discover" are different.

1. 发现 is an accidental or unexpected find of something for the first time. For instance, the discovery of the American continent, you would use 发现
2. 觉察 finding of a thing or information that is small, subtle, or unnoticeable. For instance, someone you are talking to is a little upset, you would use 觉察.
