The most common way to use 归 (guī) is to indicate that an action does not lead to a corresponding result. For example, 吵架归吵架,他们俩还是好朋友。 They were still good friends in spite of frequent quarrels.

归 (guī) is used in formal contexts. It is used to indicate that the action does not lead to a corresponding result. For example, 努力归努力,考试结果还是零 (nǔlì guī nǔlì, kǎoshì jiéguǒ háishì líng) meaning "despite studying hard, the exam result was still zero". It is contrasted with 结果 (jiéguǒ) which is used to indicate that the action does lead to a corresponding result. For example, 努力学习,结果取得了好成绩 (nǔlì xuéxí, jiéguǒ qǔdéle hǎo chéngjì) meaning "studying hard, the result was good".
