失去 vs 丧失

1. 失去 is a common word used in written and spoken Chinese. 丧失, on the other hand, is of a higher level. 丧失 is more formal and more often used in written Chinese.
2. 失去 can be followed by something something that's positive, something that we would rather keep. It can also be followed by something neutral.
For example:
- Something that one would like to keep: 我嫂子刚刚失去了工作。 r/s [phr] My elder brother's wife just lost her job.
- Something neutral: 三个星期以后,他对集邮失去了兴趣。 -/- [phr] Three weeks later, he lost interest in collecting stamps.
3.丧失, on the other hand, is always followed by something that we would rather keep.
For example: 因为脑梗塞,他丧失了记忆力。 r/s [phr] He lost his memory due to cerebral infarct.
