Lots of (but not all) Chinese characters are formed by a semantic part 形旁 (xíngpáng), which suggests the meaning of the character, and a phonetic part 声旁 (shēngpáng), which instead indicates its sound. Note that in 校(xiao4) and 效(xiao4), 交 (jiao1) acts as the phonetic part, which means 交 is important for its sound, not meaning.
