1. 交往 (jiāo wǎng) is commonly used to refer to a romantic relationship or dating. For example, 我们已经开始交往了 (wǒmen yǐjīng kāishǐ jiāo wǎng le) means "We have started dating."
2. It can also be used to describe communication or contact between individuals or groups. For instance, 我们之间的交往很顺畅 (wǒmen zhījiān de jiāo wǎng hěn shùnchàng) means "The communication between us is very smooth."
3. In some cases, 交往 (jiāo wǎng) can have a negative connotation, referring to a problematic or troublesome relationship. For example, 他们之间的交往一直很不愉快 (tāmen zhījiān de jiāo wǎng yīzhí hěn bù yúkuài) means "Their relationship has always been unpleasant."
4. It can also be used in a more general sense to describe interactions or exchanges between people or groups. For instance, 中美两国的交往日益密切 (zhōng-měi liǎngguó de jiāo wǎng rìyì mìqiè) means "The interactions between China and the United States are becoming increasingly close."

Sorry I disagree. 交往 is not necessarily only used between boyfriend and girlfriend. Please check out these examples:
他太耿直了,以至于很多人不敢和他交往。 [phr] He is so frank that many people dare not make friends with him.
人际交往 [phr] interpersonal interaction
国际交往 [n] international exchange, international connection
他是当面吹捧,背后说坏话的人,不值得交往。 [phr] He is a man who flatters a person to his face and then runs him down behind his back. It's not worth making friends with him.
