When we talk about complements (补语), we often talk about 得. 得 is often (but not always) used between a verb/an adjective and a complement (补语). It is the signal of complements.
- 做得很好 [phr] do very well
- 车开得不快 [phr] The car is not driven very fast
- 起得很早 [phr] to get up very early

Complements (补语) can be grouped into five kinds depending on its meaning and structure:
- The complement of result
- The complement of degree
- The complement of quantity
- The complement of direction
- The complement of potentiality
