描写 vs 形容

1. 描写 is used in literary works, e.g. novels, scripts, plays. It has to be in writing (or later performed out in the case of plays)

形容 can be verbal or in writing both. E.g.
你能给我形容一下那个窃贼的模样吗？ [phr] Can you give me a description of that thief?
This is verbal description.

2. 描写 is to describe or depict in great details, while 形容 can be something very general.

形容 (xíngróng) is a verb that means "to describe" or "to depict" in English. It can also refer to the physical appearance or countenance of a person or thing.

Example 1: 他用生动的语言形容了他的旅行经历。(Tā yòng shēngdòng de yǔyán xíngróng le tā de lǚxíng jīnglì.) He vividly described his travel experience.

Example 2: 她的形容让我想起了我的妈妈。(Tā de xíngróng ràng wǒ xiǎng qǐ le wǒ de māmā.) Her appearance reminded me of my mother.
