除非 (chú fēi) and 如果 (rúguǒ) both mean "only if, only when, unless" in Chinese. However, 除非 (chú fēi) is used to express a condition that must be met in order for something to happen, while 如果 (rúguǒ) is used to express a hypothetical situation. For example, 除非你有一个有效的签证，否则你不能进入这个国家 (chú fēi nǐ yǒu yīgè yǒuxiào de qiānzhèng, fǒuzé nǐ bù néng jìnrù zhège guójiā) means "You cannot enter this country unless you have a valid visa". On the other hand, 如果你有一个有效的签证，你可以进入这个国家 (rúguǒ nǐ yǒu yīgè yǒuxiào de qiānzhèng, nǐ kěyǐ jìnrù zhège guójiā) means "If you have a valid visa, you can enter this country".
