痛 vs 疼
疼 can be a verb. 痛 cannot.
When 痛 and 疼 are both adjectives, 痛 can refer to "hurt mentally or psychologically" -- grieved, sorrowful
When they are both adjectives meaning "(physically) painful, aching", 疼 is more informal. For instance, we can say 头痛 and 头疼, but 头疼 is more informal and used more often in daily language.
