放弃 and 戒 can both mean "give up". What is their difference?

放弃： stop making an effort, resign oneself to failure
戒：abstain oneself from doing something or enjoying something, usually because we believe it's something that's bad for the person. Only a few limited things can follow 戒, e.g. 烟, 酒, 赌, etc.

放弃 (fàng qì) would not be appropriate in situations where the person is not actually giving up or abandoning something. For example, if a person is simply taking a break from something, it would not be appropriate to use 放弃 (fàng qì). In this case, a more appropriate word would be 休息 (xiū xí) meaning "rest".
