列 (liè) is used when referring to a row, line, or column of something, or when referring to a category or sort of something. For example, 列一列 (liè yī liè) means "to line up in a row".
In contrast, 写 (xiě) is used when referring to writing or recording something. For example, 写下 (xiě xià) means "to write down".
