Difference between 读 and 念:

1. When they both mean "to read", 念 is usually "to read aloud"; 读 can be with sound or not.

2. When they both mean "to study", there's not much of a difference. They can be used interchangeably. 念 might be slightly less formal than 读.

3. 念 has a lot of other meanings that 读 does not have.
