祖母 (zǔmǔ) is used to address someone's grandmother on their father's side in conversation. It is a respectful way to refer to the grandmother, and is used in the same way as "Grandma" in English. It is not used to refer to the grandmother on the mother's side, which would be 奶奶 (nǎinai).
