In may cases the radical can be seen as the left part of a complex character (for example in 们 it is the left part which represents the 'person' character).
But there are cases where the character is not easily split into left-right, there the radical could be in the upper or even in the lower part of that character.
Finally there are characters which by themselves are also a radical (for example 口).
