I love the pin yin trainer. It really helps train my ear. I know that learning definitions is not the point of the pin yin trainer, but it would be great if you could indicate what the word we are listening to means in English. Every little bit helps. Thanks for the site.

Thank you for sharing your praise on the Pinyin trainer.
By the way the Pinyin trainer is now available both for iPhone/iPad as well as for Android based phones and tablets. The new version of Pinyin Trainer for iPhone/iPad was just submitted for approval and includes many more and higher quality audio as well as the possibility to train not only the tones but also the different initials which also create some problems for some foreigners. Regarding to your suggestion, to include translations, we are afraid that due to the ambiguity of many Chinese pinyin expressions the number of possible translations is just too large to make it useful. Due to that we decided not to include translations into that tool. Should you be interested to learn to distinguish specific words, you can make use of the trainchinese Dictionary and Flashcards application. There you can select to use the Recognition training mode, in that mode a new card will be read aloud so that you can check if you can recognize it. Of course the flashcards would also allow you to train any of the other modes, such as translation, reading (of Chinese) and even dictation. The modes you want to use are configurable, so you do not need to learn everything unless you want! |
