The translations of 孤单 and 寂寞 look very similar. The difference is: 孤单 (lonely solitary), emphasizes on one being alone, by him/herself, no company. 寂寞 on the other hand is more about someone's feeling. A person can be surrounded by a bunch of people and still feel 寂寞.

孤单 vs 孤独
1. 孤单 can mean "alone" and "weak". 孤独 doesn't have these two meanings.
2. When 孤单 and 孤独 mean "lonely, solitary", they are pretty much and same and can be used interchangeably.
3. 孤单 can appear in its reduplicated form -- 孤孤单单; we rarely use the reduplicated form of 孤独, which is 孤孤独独.
